Combining the spontaneity and freedom of movement of dropping and staining techniques with the meticulousness of Japanese woodblock is a true exercise in active Zen. The expressive force of the stain (yang) counterpoints the control and containment of the minutely detailed carving (yin), helping to balance the spirit and ease the mind.
These abstract works are the result of emptying the mind during a large part of the work process, allowing energies to flow through the brush and later be contained by the gouge, freed once again in an inking of several different colours on a single block, resulting in unique prints.
Here there is no preceding discourse, the execution is a discourse in itself; the pieces constitute a directly emotional communication to be enjoyed with an open mind, just as they were created.
